We thought we could live with our kitchen for awhile until the cabinet doors started falling on my very pregnant head. Solid plywood doors came off their hinges constantly and we decided to go ahead and renovate. I was still working a bajillion hours a week so we interviewed and hired a contractor to do the renovation. I wish I knew what I do now about DIY, because I would never renovate a kitchen that way again. It can be done so much cheaper with the same or better results as long as you have patience and time. You don’t even need to do anything yourself, but finding your own contractors and acting as the GC (General Contractor) can save you a bunch of moolah.
We ended up ditching the contractor towards the end of the project for everything from the tile to the counter tops to the built-ins and we ended up with a kitchen we love!
I will share a lot with you about doing your own kitchen remodel, but for now, know that this renovation gave me the DIY bug and made me the tool girl I am today. So in that way, I am thankful for the contractors that made me cry and doubt what I knew I wanted.
Before we could actually do anything in the kitchen, we had to support the ceiling with a wall that had been removed and support the floor with a new staircase and beams in the basement. That was a whole bunch of fun times on the wallet! Sophia was a huge fan of the giant piles of drywall in our new framed opening.
Not only did we need to add a wall, but because we decided to extend the kitchen past where the original wall was, we actually removed a window. That gave us room for a banquette where we spend a lot of time eating and doing projects. I still need to build a trestle table to make it easier to get in and out, but this work for now and no one cares how beat up it gets. I love books in any room and the kitchen is a great place to show off some vases and of course, keep the cookbooks. This bookcase and bench was built by a carpenter here in Charlotte for 10% of what contracting firms quoted us. The entire bench has storage inside. Much needed in an old house with limited closets and no real pantry.
It always stinks to remove light but here it was just the right move. Besides, we still have 1 window with a fabulous window treatment that I absolutely adore! Yeah baby, it is a linen with an orange velvet damask. Bonus…it was salvage from someone’s large order and was remnant fabric!
The window is not missed and you can see here we gained about 4 feet in the kitchen. We did have to re-do the floors in the kitchen (you can see they run different ways) but they were original to the house and had been sanded so many times that they were too thin to sand again.
In the extra space we gained across from the table we added a bar / storage area. We also moved the door to the kitchen so that it was directly across from the door on the other side of the hallway. Small change but it made a huge difference! You can see how the door now looks straight across into what is now our laundry and mud room. Before it was off by about 2 feet.
Here are a few pics of the renovation.
We ditched the contractors after the cabinets and electrical were in so we went out and found an awesome granite installer and chose a gorgeous piece of white Carrera marble. When they got it off the truck it was cracked right where the sink hole was. I was devastated. I searched high and low for another piece that large with very few grey veins and came up empty handed. All of the warehouses said it would be months before he next quarry deliveries to the Southeast. With my second child Miles due any day, I had to make another choice. We went with black honed granite and we are very happy. It is perfect because I am not a huge fan of the shiny stones and like the marble I wanted, this has no sheen. It is smooth and simple and elegant. As a bonus, it happens to come in HUGE pieces so we have only 1 seam in the whole kitchen and it is not on the island. Wahoo!
I did finally get my white Carerra too. It went on the back splash in subway tile form. Subway tiles are perfect for a craftsman house and white marble is perfect for me!
Our kitchen shows off 3 of the main colors in our home. We definitely have a mood board that is helping us to make decisions around here. Grey and black are my neutrals and one my punches is orange! It is so bright and sunny and little pops of it just make me happy.
I hope you like the kitchen, but remember, your house is all about you so I won’t worry if it is not your thing. What we want to do is find ways to make our homes a reflection of us.
I will share all of my kitchen knowledge but please go ahead and share your renovation stories too. Good or bad. Kitchen renovations are hard but worth it. We had some sort of makeshift counter I made from one of the old cupboards in the dining room, a hot plate and a microwave for MONTHS! Misery loves company, so share away!
Oh, this is the very first post here at Tip Top Nest so thank you for stopping by. I would love to share more home renovations but this site will also have home maintenance tips, tutorials and design advice. Love it! Gorgeous new kitchen and blog!!
I am currently under construction, but it’s not the fun, enjoyable kind. We are tearing out our floors (old house) because of subfloor rot. Money out the door. But, next month I get to redo my kids’ bath. That will be much more fun!

Ugh. We had to do that in our back rooms when we moved a wall. Miserable money you will never see. Good that you found it though. It can cause real problems and even more money! We are mid kids bath renovations too. I would love if you would share your pics and experience here!
I am on the verge of a kitchen reno too. The basement has been a construction zone for over a year…but it’s getting there! I dont remember what it’s like to have a normal life anymore!
Haha I know. We don’t live normal. We live demo. Well, I live for demo. My husband hates every minute of it. But he still loves me! Good luck with your kitchen. I would love for you to share your progress or end product here!
congrats! Excited to be your first commenter! I know this site has been a long time in the making, I’m happy for you that you were finally able to make it a reality!

Thanks so much Gigi! As you know, the first comment is the best feeling in the world. Mwah!
What a gorgeous kitchen! I am in love with the color, and the built ins. Hey, if I remodel my kitchen, will I get the cute toddler as well?
Have a great week!

She is no toddler anymore! Thank you so much. I adore grey. It soothes me and the orange makes me happy. Thanks so much for coming by on my first day!
I love your kitchen- it looks very similar to mine, actually! What I love are those top cabinets. We have all this open “display” space above ours and I’m just not sure what to do with it. I cannot even imagine going through a kitchen reno while pregnant!!
It looks amazing.
I can’t wait to read more!!

Great minds design alike! I totally had to have something to the ceiling. I never knew what to do or how to keep clean that area above the cabinets in our old house. My mom always had her collection of pitchers there and that was cute but I think she had more space than we did because when I tried it something looked wrong.
And honey, I am like a super human while pregnant. Nesting kicks in from Day 1 and I just go. I terrify people. Just think what I could get done if I baked a 4th!
Looks great! I’d love to remodel but I’m holding out for a move here in the {hopefully} near future.
Congrats also on your new site, extremely excited for you!!! Blessings.

I love this blog! Can’t wait to see more of your charming little house!

Thank you so much!
Love the new site! And I love your kitchen!
We did a remodel (actually the entire house with plenty of horror stories!) and redid our kitchen too, about 13 years ago. We added a big open dining/sunroom and tore down the wall between so it is a nice, big open area. Because of issues surrounding the horror stories, we were running short of funds when it came time to finish the kitchen. Our cabinets were solid wood and still strong, just ugly dark wood. Two days before a scheduled birthday party at our house, my husband pulls them all off the walls and out onto the deck! We sanded and beat and rubbed and ended up with a light cream distressed wash on them. I love the way it turned out! We got inexpensive stock countertop at the time.
Now that some time has gone by, I am thinking about doing something different. Don’t know that I want to put 10k into cabinets. May repaint? And would like some solid countertops. Will love to hear some of what you learned!

Oh you will hear quite a bit and I have tons of tips for reusing what is in your kitchen. Solid wood cabinets tops that list. If they are not damaged they are very valuable, particularly if you are not re-doing your layout! If you start looking for countertops and are re-using your existing cabinets you should be able to take your time and find a great deal on something you really want. There are some great solid surfaces out there and a fun trip to the granite warehouse in your area can answer a lot of questions on price and options. You will know where you stand and can then get various quotes on what you like on the phone or even online. You can also look into some of the awesome manufactured solid surface countertops out there. I will certainly post on these as there are many that I love!
You have had a 13 year break from reno…it just might be time
Thank you for sharing all of your pics. We are not do it yourselfers, unfortunately. Otherwise, there would be some cool changes I would make to our place. It is not old, but I would SO love some built-ins. I’m toying with the idea of faking built-ins with some Ikea shelves and molding . . . we’ll see!
Sharon {Grumpy, Sleepy, and Bashful} recently posted..Something to Remember
Sharon, you don’t need to be a diy person at all! There are tons of ways to save money over going with a high end contractor and getting just what you want. A little research, patience and organization go a long way. Also, a good handyman is much cheaper than a big firm and can do a million projects. I have one who helps with a ton of my bigger stuff (like gutting our kids’ bathroom).
Built-Ins are fabulous and are so functional and beautiful. You can certainly hack and ikea piece or go with stock cabinets for a ton of built ins. The benefit here is that you end up with a more customized project that can be solid wood (or plywood) and therefore last much longer and be paint or stainable.
I will be posting a lot about built ins and options for the real thing or faking it! Stay tuned and thanks so much for visiting on the first day of my new blog!
Congratulations on the new blog, love the look!
And oh my, I have serious kitchen envy now. I love grey. We have a grey feature wall in our new home and everyday I see it, it makes me happy.
We haven’t done much in our new place (moved in 3 months ago), as it wasin ready to move in condition – we changed all the lights and fans (advantage of living in a tropical country – fans!), gave the whole place a lick of paint and that’s it. We have still to put in shelves/ storage solutions in various parts of the house, and the part I most look forward to? Glassing off the balcony area. We live on the 27th floor of a high rise apartment and it came with a huge balcony. However, rain and dust is making it unusable, so we are planning to glass it off, and make it an extension of sorts to the living room. I can’t wait for that to happen, then I can do it up!

Brittany you have been inspiring me for a while as I’ve been stalking, I mean following you on Mommy Words. I’m amazed at how much you get done with your little ones underfoot, I know I can do more. I’m remodeling my bedroom but stopped after I ripped out the closets because I got scared, now I’m inspired again! Thanks!

Wow, that was a lot to take in! I will just say one thing. I think it was a good idea to move the door over 2 feet to line things up. That would have bothered me, for sure. I like it when things flow and it’s easy to walk around the house
Kind of reminds me of when we had to move our kitchen window up three inches so that we could have the base cabinets fit below. It was a lot of work for such a short distance, but it was worth it in the end.
I know this is going to be a blog I love

Oh we might be house sisters. We moved a bedroom window 16 inches to the left to make a better flow and better light. My husband was choking on the idea but now he loves it! And we took the sill off two windows and redid the whole frame just to fit some dressers underneath the window and not have them sticking way out from the wall!
Most of my posts will have less to take in. The things we have already done I won’t post in all the steps though, so those might be a lot.
So glad you stopped by!
I have done a lot of minor remodeling, all DIY, but never have done any demolition. Some day I hope I can do that to our kitchen! Great work you did and the photos are fantastic!
You should so do some demo. It is so much fun and honestly, I totally count it as exercise. Thanks so much for stopping by! There is definitely demo and how-to’s to come!
